



Why Do My Prints Have Ugly Layer Lines?

You finish a print, pick it up, and... there they are.
Those little ridges running all over your model like tiny stairs.
Welcome to 3D printing. Every single one of us has stared at a print thinking, "Why does this look like it was carved with a butter knife?"
The good news? Layer lines are completely normal.
The better news? You can make them a whole lot less noticeable.
What Are Layer Lines?
FDM printers build objects one layer at a time.
Imagine stacking hundreds of pancakes. Even if you stack them perfectly, you'll still see where one pancake ends and the next begins.
That's exactly what your printer is doing.
You'll never completely eliminate layer lines, but you can make them so subtle that most people never notice them.
The Five Biggest Reasons Your Prints Look Rough
1. Your Layer Height Is Too High
This is the biggest culprit.
Thicker layers print faster...
...but they're also much easier to see.
Think of it like building stairs.
Tiny steps feel smooth.
Huge steps feel like you're climbing a mountain.
A good starting point:
✅ 0.20mm = Everyday printing
✨ 0.16mm or 0.12mm = Better detail
⚡ 0.28-0.30mm = Fast prototypes where appearance isn't important
A simple rule:
Never make your layer height more than about 80% of your nozzle size.
Using a standard 0.4mm nozzle?
Stay at 0.32mm or less.
2. Your Printer Isn't Extruding the Right Amount
Your printer has one job.
Put down just enough plastic.
Not too much.
Not too little.
Too little?
You'll see gaps and weak layers.
Too much?
You'll get blobs and rough surfaces.

• Nozzle: 200°C
• Bed: 60°C
PETG
• Nozzle: 230°C
• Bed: 75°C
ABS
• Nozzle: 240°C
• Bed: 100°C
Every filament brand behaves a little differently.
Even different colors from the same company can need slightly different temperatures.
If your print isn't looking right, adjust by 5°C at a time, not 20.
4. Hide the Seam
Most slicers start every new layer in the same spot.
That creates one obvious vertical line running up your print.
Many slicers let you randomize or hide that seam.
The layer lines don't disappear...
...they just stop forming one giant scar down the side of your model.
Look for settings like:
• Random Seam
• Randomize Layer Start
• Seam Position
The wording depends on the slicer, because software developers apparently enjoy naming the same feature six different ways.
5. Make Sure Your Printer Isn't Loose
Sometimes it isn't your settings.
It's your machine.
Check the basics:
✅ Belts should feel snug.
✅ Your Z-axis should move smoothly.
✅ Your bed should be level.
✅ Nothing should wobble.
You don't need to rebuild your printer every weekend.
Just make sure nothing obvious is loose before spending three hours chasing slicer settings.

If you're just getting started, these settings work well on most modern printers.
Layer Height: 0.20mm
Walls: 3
Infill: 20%
Nozzle: 200°C
Bed: 60°C
Print Speed: 50mm/sec
Cooling: 100% after the first layer
Start here.
Then change one setting at a time.
If you change eight things at once, you'll never know which one actually fixed the problem.
Your Filament Matters More Than You Think
Not all filament is created equal.
Cheap filament can have inconsistent diameter, extra moisture, and poor quality control.
That means:
• More stringing
• More clogs
• More visible layer lines
• More conversations with yourself that probably shouldn't happen in front of children.
For beginners, PLA+ is hard to beat.
Compared to regular PLA, it's usually:
✔ Stronger
✔ Easier to print
✔ Better layer adhesion
✔ Cleaner-looking finished prints
Spending a few extra dollars on quality filament usually saves you far more in failed prints.

If you're building a display piece or something you plan to paint, a little post-processing goes a long way.
Sand It
Start around 400 grit and work your way up to 1000 grit.
Wet sanding keeps the dust down and gives a smoother finish.
Fill and Paint
A filler primer hides small layer lines before painting and gives the cleanest overall finish.
Acetone Vapor (ABS Only)
ABS can be chemically smoothed using acetone vapor.
It works incredibly well...
...but acetone is highly flammable, so don't accidentally turn your garage into tomorrow's local news story.
Frequently Asked Questions
I followed all of this and I still have layer lines. What gives?
Don't panic.
If you're still seeing rough prints, check these three things:
• Your filament may be poor quality or have absorbed moisture.
• Your printer could have a mechanical issue like loose belts or inconsistent Z-axis movement.
• Room temperature can actually matter. Drafts and big temperature swings can affect print quality more than people realize.
The easiest thing to rule out first?
Try a fresh spool of quality filament.
It's amazing how many mysterious problems magically disappear.
Is a smaller layer height always better?
Not really.
Tiny layers like 0.05mm can look fantastic...
...but they also take forever and require your printer to be dialed in almost perfectly.
For most people, 0.10mm to 0.20mm is the sweet spot between quality and print time.
Do different materials show layer lines differently?
Absolutely.
PLA tends to show layer lines a little more because it's stiffer.
PETG bonds really well between layers, making them appear less noticeable.
ABS can produce beautiful prints too, but it shrinks more as it cools, so warping becomes a bigger concern.
Every material has its own personality.
Some are cooperative.
Some wake up and choose violence.
Do I need to change settings every time I print?
Not usually.
A much easier approach is to save a profile for each material you use.
One profile for PLA.
One for PETG.
One for ABS.
If you're using the same brand and material, you'll usually be able to reuse those settings without starting from scratch every time.
